Petulu

Come to Petulu village in the afternoon until the dusk. From the rim of the rice fields, stay relax and observe the sky. We will see hundreds of beautiful white egrets, called Kokokan, coming to their nests. As the egrets come more and more, the sky is going to be crimson. Surely, it will be an unforgettable afternoon.

There are 3 kinds of egrets living in Petulu: little egret, cattle egret, and Javan pond heron. There is a certain order in how the birds build their nests in the trees. Historically these herons first arrived in Petulu in 1965 right when the villagers were having a large ceremony at their temple. As these birds arrived after their religious ceremony, the villagers consider them as a blessing from God. Surely the birds are sacred. Nowadays there's even a special ceremony for the egrets called Memendak Kokokan.
